About TCAUW
TCAUW was established in 1991 by professional Turkish Cypriot women with vision and mission of encouraging participation of women in solving the problems arise at all sectors of the society, to empower and enable women to become influential and effective in every field and all levels of public life.
TCAUW considers evidence-based planning and advocacy through collective action as vital pillars for the development of a holistic and well-planned future policies and strategies, which will contribute towards the elimination of gender disparities in women’s access to productive resources and decision making in the northern part of Cyprus.
TCAUW had conducted the Gender Profile in Education and Employment Survey in the northern part of Cyprus in 2001. The survey did not only provide information on the situation of women in economic life, but also served as a first comprehensive source of data for CSOs and academics working on gender issues in early 2000s. Through Parity project which is funded by the European Union under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community, TCAUW also aims to contribute to the evidence-based research and partnership among all relevant groups working towards gender equality.
The purpose of TCAUW;
- To promote understanding and friendship among university women around the world, regardless of their race, nationality, religion and political views, to promote international cooperation, to advance the development of education, to represent university women in international organizations and to promote the knowledge and skills of women in all areas of public life at the national, regional or world level and to encourage their application to the problems that arise at all levels and their participation in the solution of these problems,
- To ensure and advance the exchange of ideas, unity and solidarity, friendship, cooperation, agreement, cooperation and cultural development among women who have a university degree or an equivalent document or a post-university diploma. In this way, to support efforts to develop friendship, solidarity and cooperation among all people in the country and the world, and to ensure the exchange of culture and ideas,
- Promoting gender equality, eliminating discrimination, improving the position of women in the public sphere, striving to ensure equality between men and women in decision-making and power sharing at all levels, and supporting women's participation in political, economic and social life,
- To encourage and mobilize women to realize and accept their responsibilities towards the local, national and international society, to help and guide them in increasing their effectiveness and achieving economic freedom,
- To contribute to the education, enlightenment and development of women so that they can reach the highest possible cultural level and use their talents and skills in society based on democracy and respect for human rights, to teach them to read and write, as well as to receive vocational skills and advanced training and to share their knowledge with others and themselves.
- By taking an active role in educational, economic and social issues affecting women, striving to ensure the recognition of women's human rights and the integration of all issues related to women with practices in the public sphere, to ensure that women can benefit from all opportunities and resources in accordance with the principle of equality and to establish the understanding of development based on gender equality,
- To support women's contributions to the management of natural resources and protection of the environment,
- To support steps to change the education system and social understanding at all levels in order to change the psychological, social and traditional practices that are the main hindering factors in the development of women,
- To raise awareness about violence against women, to reject all kinds of violence and to strive to prevent it,
- To encourage women to take an active and effective role in preventing and resolving conflicts and ensuring peace and security, and to support their participation in peace processes at decision-making levels,
- To monitor developments in the world and to assist women in applying new methods to achieve their democratic and equal rights.
